title: Should I Delegate More Even If I Can Do the Work Better Myself?
description: Being the best at a task and being the right person to keep doing it are different questions. A look at the real cost of holding onto work you happen to do well, drawing on Adam Smith's case for specialization.

Imagine a founder who can build a client financial model faster and cleaner than any analyst they could hire. By the strict measure of speed and accuracy, keeping that work looks like the obvious choice. And yet almost nobody would recommend the founder keep building every model personally - an hour spent in a spreadsheet is an hour not spent on the decisions only a founder can make, and an analyst's version, even if slightly rougher, is still good enough to work from.

This isn't a new argument. Adam Smith built much of *The Wealth of Nations* around the same logic in 1776, describing a pin factory where ten workers, each handling a single step of the process, produced thousands of times more pins in a day than the same ten workers could have made working alone, each attempting the whole job start to finish. The gain came from routing each worker's effort to the single step where it mattered most - the same principle worth applying to a founder's own calendar.

#### ⚡ A task done well by someone else can still create more value for the business than the same task done perfectly by the owner.

### Owner time

An hour has the same length no matter what fills it, but it doesn't have the same value. What matters is what else that hour could have produced instead: a client relationship advanced, a hiring decision finally made, a problem only the owner is positioned to solve. A task can be done well and still be the most expensive way to spend that hour in the business.

### Comparative capability

"Best at this task" and "best available for this task" sound like the same claim and rarely are. Someone hired specifically for the work might reach most of the owner's quality at a fraction of the time cost - close enough that the difference barely registers to a client or a colleague, while the hours it frees up for the owner go somewhere the business genuinely can't replace.

### Acceptable quality

The honest test is whether a small quality dip would cost the business something real - a client walking away, a deadline missed, an error nobody catches in time. Often it wouldn't. What actually changes is that the work looks different than it would have in the owner's hands, and that difference reads as discomfort more than as risk.

### Replacement capability

Some of what an owner does lives only in their head - genuinely un-transferable, at least for now. Much of it doesn't. If a task can be documented, taught, or handed to someone else without the business losing anything that matters, keeping it is simply a choice being made every day.

#### ⚡ Keeping a task because you do it best can waste the capability only you bring to the business.

### Higher-value owner work

Every hour spent on a task someone else could learn to do is an hour not spent on whatever only the owner can currently do - the hiring call nobody else is positioned to make, the relationship that took years to build, the direction only the owner has the full picture to set. That work doesn't announce itself as urgent the way a task sitting on today's list does. It just stays undone.

### Where this leaves the decision

What decides this is where the owner's time creates the most value, not which task the owner happens to do best.
